I started this project several years ago on one of my family's RV trips. I decided that since I was going to all of these beautiful places, instead of just taking pictures of the places, which you could easily find with a quick Google search, I would photograph the people in these places. Thus was born "People Doing Cute Things in Beautiful Places". This is an ongoing project that I hope to continuously be adding to in the years to come. The only rule I put on myself for these is that they have to be of people I don't know, other than that everything is fair game.
Teton Mountains, Wyoming, Summer 2012
The first time I was ever struck by the majesty and wonder of a mountain range was when I saw the Teton Mountains for the first time. The way they just spring up from flat, Indiana-like land, into these massive and beautiful formations takes my breath away every time I've had the pleasure of seeing them. This particular photo is from my second time seeing these mountains, and this artist was sitting on the back of his car and admiring the mountains with his paint brush.
Salt Flats, Utah, Summer 2012
While my family was out west the summer after I graduated high school, we stopped by the salt flats. It looked like we had stepped into an entirely new world. As far as you could see was just salt, and as this family posed for a picture with it I was struck by how out of place their colorful clothes looked against such a desolate background.
Kluane Lake, Yukon, Summer 2014
As my family was driving around this unbelievably beautiful lake on our way up to Alaska, I had my head sticking out the window wildly snapping photos of everything I could possibly capture. Then, we made our way around a bend in the lake and all of a sudden I saw this man walking by the lake towards his dog and I knew that was my shot.
Thompson's Pass, Alaska, Summer 2014
When I think back to the most breathtaking places I've ever been, this place is probably in the top 3. I remember just standing looking out over this incredible landscape and thinking to myself, "I think even if I sat here and stared at this for a whole week this view wouldn't get old." As I was reluctantly walking back to our RV so we could keep moving down the road I saw these two walking together, hand in hand amongst the mountains, and that was pretty darn beautiful too.
Valdez, Alaska, Summer 2014
We were on the tail end of our afternoon cruise through Prince William Sound where we had just seen puffins flying, sea lions swimming, whales waving their tales, and a glacier calving off into the ocean, and as we were nearing the port we saw that all of the fishermen were out and about bringing in their nets for the day. Our captain pulled us right up to one of the fishing boats and chatted with the fisherman and we got to watch him shovel a ton of fish into an opening on the boat for safe-keeping. That was quite a day!
Along the Seward Highway, Alaska, Summer 2014
As we were driving along the Seward Highway taking in the scenery, we decided to pull over at one of the lakes and walk around for a little bit to stretch our legs and get some fresh air. We walked down to the boat ramp and saw several different groups of people getting ready to launch their boats, but I spotted this couple sitting together getting ready with their dog faithfully guarding them and I immediately knew I had to photograph this whole scene.
Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, Summer 2014
This day was an experience that words can't really describe. We flew out of Ninilichik on a boat plane, where we then landed on a lake and hopped on a small boat which took us to a place where a river ran into the lake. That was then where we set up shop to start sockeye salmon fishing, and while we were there a momma brown bear and her two cubs came to catch some fish too. As you can see, we were not very far from these massive creatures, but they could not care less that we were there. After we fished for quite a while, we got back on the plane, flew over a glacier and got to look straight down into the crevices, and then got back to Ninilchik.
Florence, Oregon, Summer 2014
We were staying at one of our favorite RV parks, Darlings RV Park, which is situated right on a lake and right next to the sand dunes in Oregon. While we were grilling dinner and hanging out outside, I saw this couple relaxing on the dock watching the world float on around them and thought it was just so darn cute.
Chicago, Illinois, Fall 2014
While on a trip to visit friends in Chicago, I took a day to roam around the city by myself, and I decided to go to the Art Institute of Chicago for the first time ever, and oh boy was that a treat! There are so many incredible works of art there, and I only got to see about a tenth of them that day! One of my favorite things that I did that day was listen to people as they admired or dismissed different pieces that were in the galleries, and this photo was of a group of friends who were looking intently at one of the Jackson Pollucks that was there at the time.
Cox Hall Gardens, Indiana, Spring 2015
Whilst working on a project to photograph locations I enjoy using for photo sessions I noticed these two patiently waiting in the pavilion while their granddaughter got her senior portraits taken. I loved how their positions mirrored the statue at the very top of the stairs.
Indiana Dunes State Park, Indiana, Fall 2016
My family drove our RV three hours north to spend the weekend along the shoreline of Lake Michigan. We sat around a campfire, ran around on the dunes, and admired the sunsets over the lake. On Saturday evening I went out to take pictures of people enjoying the sunset on the lakeshore. I've recently been playing around with the light right after the sun sets, so I loved this image of a couple walking on the beach with the sky subtly lit up behind them on the opposite horizon of where the sun had set.
Good Hart, Michigan, Summer 2017
This summer my entire family was able to go on a vacation together and we ended up renting a cabin off of Airbnb that was tucked away in the woods on the northwest coast of Michigan. Each night we would make the short walk to the beach to watch the sunset and we would get to enjoy it with the other families who were vacationing there. This was one of the particularly beautiful sunsets we got to see over the water and I just loved that this dad, daughter, and doggo got to share it together.
Chicago, Illinois, Winter 2017
During a trip to Chicago with my dad's company we walked through the Christkindlmarket and enjoyed the amazing smells and trinkets they had to offer. I loved how these two were nestled in the light of the booth during a brief pause from the crowds.
